Ice edge Warriors

Home ice remains a hot spot for the Kootenay Ice.

It was a battle of Western Hockey League heavyweights in goal, with league-leading Nathan Lieuwen of the Ice and Moose Jaw Warriors’ ‘tender DUNCAn Siemens at the Cranbrook Rec-Plex Saturday night, Oct. 22.

Lieuwen made 35 saves to lead the Ice to a 2-1 victory before 2,790 at the Rec-Plex, while Siemens steered aside 36 shots in the loss.

Both teams were held scoreless until Max Reinhart scored his sixth of the season 6:48 into the third period of a tight-checking contest. Both clubs battened down the hatches and upped their discipline

Captain Drew Czerwonka scored an empty-net marker with 45 seconds remaining to seal the deal, but not completely silence the Warriors, as defenseman Collin Bowman scored with 27 seconds left to spoil Lieuwen’s shutout.

With the victory the Ice remain in a running battle for the WHL’s Central Division lead with the Medicine Hat Tigers and Edmonton Oil Kings, with an eight win, three loss and two shootout loss record.

The Ice head to Alberta tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Hitmen in Calgary, and they return to Cranbrook for an Oct. 26 tilt against the Red Deer Rebels. Game time is 7 p.m.
