It’s a choice between ‘No Fun’, ‘Some Fun’ or ‘Lotsa Fun’ to register online for this year’s Sun Life Financial Sam Steele Ball Tournament but we know it’s really three days of all fun with awesome prizes, June 17 to 19.

Last year they saw a record 75 teams (750 players) partake in one of B.C.’s most popular Slopitch tournaments organized by the volunteer Sam Steele Ball committee. With great gear and cash prizes totalling $10,000 in value up for grabs, no wonder this event continues to grow.

Past success has benefitted the whole city by financing upgrades like a covered double batting cage at Confederation Park, a bathroom and storage building at Moir Park, and a batting/ pitching cage at the Kinsmen Quad parks. This year the proceeds will go to capital projects at Confederation Park which may be new dugouts with attached change rooms for the big park, new scoreboard, safety bumpers on fences and/or bull pens for the small fields. Registration is now open and they will only be accepting a maximum of 80 teams.

“We’re expecting a lot of people to be suffering from ‘funstroke’ by the end of the weekend” says committee Chair Seana Coolbaugh. Get your team together and play ball!

The BA Blacktop Balls of Steele Bocce tournament promises to keep attendees entertained on Saturday June 18 with the DJ talents of Jacks Audio, fantastic food, wet-your-whistle drinks and wild prizes to win. Each player of the winning team will receive a return airfare ticket ($500 value) courtesy of Pacific Coastal Airlines. Cash prizes will be given to second place and the best costumed team.

The Sam Steele Committee is grateful to JCI Kootenay for coordinating the adult event for the past three years and is eager to develop it further since accepting the transfer last fall. Register your team after April 15 by calling (250) 426-4161, emailing [email protected] or download the form from the Balls of Steele Bocce Facebook page or the event page on the official Sam Steele Days website.

KEYSA Rovers are excited to host teams and families from in and outside of the province at their Sam Steele Youth Soccer Tournament June 17 – 19. This event (pictured above) welcomed 975 players in 2015! (Plus the parents, siblings and coaches that came with them) Kudos to the sponsors, the organizing committee and parents who dedicate their time to support their soccer stars.

SSD Strongman2Four additional sports are active during Cranbrook’s largest festival; the Strongman Classic, Disc Golf, Beach Volley Ball and the Arm Wrestling Classic.

Fitness Inc.’s popular Strongman event, part of Sam Steele Days since its inception in 2004, showcases amazing athletes in ways that make your jaw drop. Participants will compete in six unique challenges from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday June 18 next to the central fairgrounds, Rotary Park.

SSD Byng ArmwrestlingThe Legendary Byng Roadhouse calls all ‘Arms of Steele’ to compete for the 2016 title of Arm Wrestling Champion, also on June 18. Weigh-ins and registration will take place at noon and the fist tightening tension launches at 3 p.m. This adult event requires serious strength and focus although the atmosphere of live music and spirits will make you want to stay til the wee hours.

College of the Rockies is the place where you can spend an afternoon playing disc golf and the East Kootenay Volley Ball (EKVC) holds a multi-day beach volley ball tournament there too. The games of Sam Steele Days are calling to everyone! Find details on all Sam Steele Days sports, music, the parade and events at www.samsteeledays.org or call (250) 426-4161.
