Third annual Gran Fondo Saturday

Several hundred cyclists will be gathering at St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino Saturday morning, Sept. 12, for the start of the third annual Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo.

GF40Riders have three event options to select from.

There is the Gran Fondo of 152 km (95 miles with about 1,303 metres/4,002 feet of climbing), a Medio Fondo of 102 kms (62 miles with 685 metres/2,250 feet) and a Piccolo Fondo of 58 kms (34 miles with 355 metres/1,167 feet).

If you wish to catch some of the action, the following is a description as to where riders travel.

Cycle west, 4.8 km on Mission Road, then north on Highway 95A for one km, and join the paved North Star Rails-to-Trails connector. Cycle by Marysville and arrive in Kimberley. Turn north on Rotary Drive, cross Wallinger Avenue and enter the Kimberley Platzl (Aid Station at 30 km). Depart the Platzl along Spokane Street, turn left onto Ross Street, continue on Meadowbrook Road (Hwy 95A) for 28 km, (second Aid Station).

GF32Turn right (south), cross Kootenay River onto Highway 93/95. Cycle 23 km to historic Fort Steele (third Aid Station at 80 km). Turn left (East) onto Ft Steele – Wardner Rd. Cross the Kootenay River, ride 25 km to the Kootenay Fish Hatchery (fourth Aid Station and turn around at 104 km).

Return to Ft. Steele on the same road. Turn left on Hwy 93 for eight km. Turn right (west) onto Hwy. 3. Cycle six km. Turn right (north) onto Hwy 95A . Turn right onto Mission Road and finish at the St. Eugene’s Mission Golf Resort Casino.

The race is a fully supported and traffic-controlled ride on some of the most scenic roads in the Kootenays. Volunteers provide full mechanical support throughout the duration of the ride.

The event starts and concludes at St. Eugene.

Kids gran fondoAnd don’t forget this year, the Kids’ Fondo is running Sunday, Sept. 13 at St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino. Registration begins at 9 a.m outside the front steps.

Riders get into position at 9:45 a.m. at the start gate. Ride begins at 10 a.m. A barbecue lunch to follow across the street at Aqamnik School near the playground.
