Wakesurfing Competition returns to Lake Koocanusa

The Rocky Mountain Wakesurfing Association (RMWA) is proud to announce that the second annual Koocanusa Wakesurfing Challenge will be held at Lake Koocanusa this August 9 – 11.

This is one of only two national qualifiers for the World Series of Wake Surfing (event #9) and will see the world’s best wakesurfers demonstrating their skills behind a beautiful Centurion Enzo 244. Along with the competition there will be numerous events, demos and activities for competitors, their guests and the general public to get involved.

The Koocanusa Wakesurfing Challenge gives riders an opportunity to compete and qualify for the premier wakesurfing event in the world: the Centurion World Wake Surfing Championship in Parker, Arizona, September 27 – 29.

While top competitors from across North America and the world (UK and Russia) are returning or have already signed up to take part, this B.C. Rockies competition was established to enable Western Canadian riders who would not normally have such an opportunity to compete and possibly win themselves a place at the Worlds.

The Rocky Mountain Wakesurfing Association wants everyone to know that the competition is open to all skill levels; if you can drop the rope, you can enter, so come have fun on the water! Along with a pro division there will be amateur, junior and master categories for both men and women.

As a fundraiser for the event, H2O School is thrilled to host a camp with a highly acclaimed pro-wakesurfing coach immediately before the competition.

Join pro rider and world champion Keenan Flegel for his camps August 7 – 8. Seventeen-year-old Keenan hails from Florida and is taking the wakesurfing world by storm! In addition to winning first in Men’s Pro Surf at the 2012 World Series Wakesurfing Championship in Arizona, he took home first place in every Skim style event (seven) he entered across North America including the 2012 USA Wakesurf Nationals in June 2012 and our own KWC event. He has been World Champion twice so far (2012 Pro Men Surf and 2010 Pro Men Skim.) Don’t miss the chance to learn from this already legendary athlete. This pro can provide instruction on how to spin, do shuv-its, catch big air or put together a run for an upcoming contest. Other pro riders already committed to competing at the KWC include Jimmi Sparling, Keenan Flegel, Sean Cummings, Aaron Witherell and Caroline Villeneuve (a local currently placed first Pro Women Skim worldwide).

Interested in taking part in a camp, checking out the action as a spectator or getting involved as a volunteer or sponsor? The RMWA encourages everyone to visit their website, rmwa.ca for full event details and to contact them at [email protected] for more information. Spectators are welcome to come check out the action at Sunshine Houseboats (Gold Bay) throughout the weekend (come by water on your boat or carpool with a friend; limited parking). An emcee and food and retail vendors will be onsite, adding a festival atmosphere to the competition.

The RMWA looks forward to welcoming competitors, spectators and the world back to Lake Koocanusa this summer.
