Media event example of business collaboration

cvINVsailingAn event planned to spark media attention about the Columbia Valley (Radium, Invermere, Panorama, Windermere, Fairmont) has turned into an idyllic example of local business collaboration.

The upcoming media weekend, May 31-June 2, has been coordinated by the Columbia Valley Tourism Marketing Committee (CVTMC) and will see 30+ media from all over B.C. and Alberta come to the Columbia Valley to experience everything from golf to white water rafting, art creation to water skiing, and kayaking to yoga.

“It is amazing to see how Columbia Valley businesses have responded to this opportunity. The outpouring of offers for the media to experience has been vast and come without hesitation,” said Amanda Robinson, Chair of the CVTMC. “The committee heralds this event as an example of how the Valley can move forward and work together to achieve broader success in the tourism sector.”

cvPanoAlthough in the past joint tourism promotion efforts throughout the Columbia Valley have been far and few between, the committee is hopeful that this event and subsequent events by the committee can continue to engage the valley business community. As a sub-committee of the Columbia Valley Chamber the committee strives to promote growth in the tourism sector for Chamber member businesses, however their efforts will undoubtedly benefit all tourism-reliant businesses in the area.

Tourism is a major source of employment in the Columbia Valley, according to the Tourism Association of Canada the Kootenay-Columbia (federal riding) has 8,110 jobs and 887 businesses supported by tourism. Encouraging more tourism to the Columbia Valley is the driving force behind the Tourism Marketing Committee, the group behind both of the events mentioned here. By increasing tourism to the Columbia Valley region it is the goal of this Committee to see our community, businesses and residents alike benefit from the economic spinoff which might include an increase in spending dollars available to our local governments, students in our schools, healthcare in our community and the stability in our local economy.

cvRHSColRivThe purpose of the committee is to undertake activities that will further promote tourism to the Columbia Valley region for the benefit of all community groups, organizations, businesses and individuals.

The committee welcomes new members at the weekly Wednesday meetings at 8:30 a.m. at the Columbia Valley Chamber boardroom. Committee members are required to be members with the Columbia Valley Chamber; however, all businesses are welcome to participate in the committee’s events.
