Wings flying from May 7 to 13

In addition to bird watching expeditions, the Wings over the Rockies schedule, May 7 to 13, includes a wide range of informative luncheon, afternoon and evening presentations of interest to naturalists.  We can learn about the work of professional birders, the geology of the Columbia Valley, the animals in our national parks, historic birding and potential birding vacations outside Canada.

On Monday evening of Wings week, Nature Trust Board member and ornithologist Dr. Rob Butler speaks on bird research, international conservation and the BC Breeding Bird atlas.  Record-setting birder Russell Cannings presents Amazing Habitat Diversity = Amazing Bird Diversity during lunch at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort on Tuesday.  On Tuesday evening at Pynelogs Cultural Centre, entertaining naturalists Nadine and Joel Fletcher illustrate the amazing intelligence of Bird Brains.

Naturalists interested in the geology of our backyard can register for Gideon Smith’s lunch time talk on The Southern Rocky Mountain Trench: A Stretching Exercise after Intense Activity on Wednesday at Radium Resort.  They’ll want to follow that up by attending The Geology, the Hikes and the Birds of the Rocky Mountains on Friday evening at Pynelogs Cultural Centre with popular geologist Bill Ayrton.

On Thursday afternoon, Shelagh Wrazej offers a look award winning images from Parks Canada’s network of 35 remote wildlife cameras in the presentation No Sasquatches Yet, Virginia – A Glimpse into the Secret Lives of Wild Animals.  Hours later, history buff Howard Heffler reveals David Thompson’s bird observations during his travels in western Canada 1784 to 1812.  On Friday afternoon, Carol Patterson offers suggestions for birding holidays from Costa Rica to Iceland in her presentation, Going to the Birds.

Register early to keep learning while you are eating or the birds are roosting.  Don’t wait, as many popular events book up fast.

Registration for Wings over the Rockies starts on April 9.
