How to eat better

By Anne Davis

Don’t skip breakfast.  Have oatmeal, eggs, whole wheat toast with peanut butter or cottage cheese with fresh fruit.  You won’t be as tempted to fill up on sugary or otherwise unhealthy snacks as the day progresses.

Cut the amount of sugar you use in cooking in half – you won’t even notice the difference!

Eat slowly. Try to set your fork down between bites. Your body will be able to process the food more easily and you may even eat less overall by giving your body the time it needs to signal the brain that you are full.

If you love sweets, allow yourself to indulge but control how much you eat.  Choose to eat only small portions of high quality sweets for an extra special treat.

Snack on healthy foods in between meals to keep from feeling hungry. Try popcorn, cheese, carrot sticks, nuts or plain yogurt with fresh fruit.

Drink lots of water and keep hydrated. Add more fresh soups to your diet, fruits and vegetables are another source of hydration.

Reduce the amount of oil you use in recipes. As with the sugar, it will taste the same but you will save on calories and lower your cholesterol intake.

Eat seasonally, enjoy the fruits and veggies that are in season and you will benefit doubly – the taste is better and the produce is full of nutrients.Try to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables whenever you can.

A few changes to your choices can make a huge difference to how much energy you have.  Start making those changes today!
