Let’s talk about staying well

By Carol Gordon

Unfortunately it may take a chronic, acute or life threatening health challenge to make us realize that a lot more is required to keep us healthy than merely following a set of simple guidelines, such as these, with which we were raised:

Brush your teeth twice a day

Get eight hours of good restful sleep each night

Eat three balanced meals a day

Get plenty of exercise

Drink lots of water

Engage in regular physical exercise

Have annual physical check-ups

Why isn’t it this simple anymore? Why has it become seemingly so complicated to stay well?

“The world has changed. There are more chemicals and toxins in our air, food and water.  A doctor’s role and focus has changed from taking care of us to preventing things from getting worse.  The stress has magnified.   Life is more complicated now and the level of stress from living in this modern world is an indication of how complicated this world is.  Surveys show that the people of the Western World aren’t as happy as they used to be.” Jim McElroy, Body Worker and Wellness Consultant.  http://www.pleiadesmassage.com/PLEIADES_RADIUM.php

So our list of simple guidelines for staying well needs to be expanded to include some important additional components:

Awareness – (“ knowledge or understanding of a subject, issue, or situation”)

An Attitude – (someones opinions or feelings about something, especially as shown by their behaviour)

of Wellness (physical, mental, and emotional health, usually including a healthy way of living…)”

Being Proactive –  (“taking action and making changes before they need to be made, rather than waiting until problems develop”)

In recent years, the concept of “taking ownership of our health,” has found its way into our culture.  In order for it to be realized these three components – awareness, an attitude of wellness and being proactive – must be present.
