Quail family recognized by city
By Mary Giuliano
The Quail family has had a presence in Fernie since 1897.
For many years several members owned businesses in town. When George Quail passed away suddenly in the late ‘60s his son Douglas Quail, a chemical engineer working and living in Toronto moved back home to take over the family business.
His mother Ethel also worked there until she retired. Wilda, Doug’s wife and a dietician also chipped in when needed. In 1993 Doug decided to retire and sold the business. He wanted to make sure that parking was always available for people shopping on Main Street and so decided to donate the parking lot behind his building to the City of Fernie.
It had been used for parking and so with his generosity it has continued since then. On Friday, July 8, a sign dedication was held to let everyone know why this very valuable parking area has been available for so many decades.
This family has been part of the town’s landscape since the very beginning. They have been giving and generous in many ways.
A few years ago Doug and Wilda were recognized for their volunteer contributions and awarded the George Magic Spiritus Award. The City of Fernie council thanks and appreciates this family’s long-standing contribution to our town.
Congratulations Doug and Wilda and family.
