BC SPCA East Kootenay Happenings

Season’s greetings from all of the staff and fur babies at the East Kootenay branch of BC SPCA!

Amelia is great with other cats and when she sees you coming will turn onto her back and wait for a good tummy tickle. She has beautiful long fur, wonderful colourings and enjoys being groomed. Amelia loves to play.

Are you looking for the perfect Christmas present for the one who has everything?

We have three ways that you can give while making a difference.

Make a donation in honour of your friend or family member. You pick the amount you would like to donate in honour of the one who has everything, and we will do up a Christmas Card and either send it to the recipient or give it to you to give to the recipient.

Adopt an Envelope! From Dec. 1 until Dec. 25 you can stop by the shelter and choose an envelope that has the number corresponding with the cash value you want to give. There are envelopes numbered from one to 100. Feel free to choose more than one. You then make your donation. You will then be entered in a draw to win a gift basket valued at over $100.

Gemma is looking for a home where she can have the family all to herself. She enjoys playing with people and toys and if toys are left for her she will play by herself. Gemma is a confident cat and likes visitors and children.

Sign up your favourite kid for the BC SPCA Kids Club. A one-year membership is $15 and a two year membership is $25. It’s a great way for kids to learn more about animals and the good work that the BC SPCA does.

All donations over $20 are eligible for a charitable donation tax receipt.

Cold Weather Safety Tips

1. When the temperature drops, cats and wildlife will often gravitate to warm vehicle engines – by banging the hood to alert them, B.C. drivers can help avoid a tragic ending for an animal seeking refuge from the cold.

2. Make sure you thoroughly clean the pads of your pet’s paws after they’ve walked on sidewalks or roads to remove any coarse salt that can cause irritation. For your own sidewalk, choose a pet-friendly, non-corrosive de-icing compound readily available through retail outlets.

Susie is a large female Shepherd cross. She is a friendly dog who will sit and shake a paw. Susie walks well on a leash and is keen to be off exploring new smells. She likes to be with people and gets a little anxious when left alone. Susie will need a family with lots of time for exercise and socialization.

3. Use pet-safe propylene-based antifreeze instead of ethylene glycol antifreeze, which is toxic to pets and wildlife. A mere tablespoon of ethylene glycol antifreeze can kill a cat or small dog.

4. The BC SPCA strongly urges pet guardians to keep all animals indoors during cold weather, but if you must keep domestic or farm animals outside, ensure they have access to shelter that is off the ground, provides protection from wind, cold and dampness and is properly insulated. Regular checks to ensure drinking water has not frozen over are also a must.

YOU CAN TURN BURRS TO PURRS

When a shelter cat is adopted another cat can come in out of the cold. Help us save more lives. Adopt an adult cat from November 24 until December 5 and save 50% off the adoption fee.

Don’t forget to keep all of those bottles from your Christmas Cheer!

Saffire is a large, extra friendly cat who is looking for a loving home. She has lived with children but does enjoy being able to get away from the hustle and bustle of home life. She likes to snuggle up on your lap and relax during the evening. Please come and visit with Saffire; she will rub herself around your legs until you show her the attention she deserves.

Thanks to Gail and Richard Balance, and the folks who have donated refundables, a load of funds has been raised to assist with medical costs for all of the animals in the East Kootenay Branch’s care.  Gail and Richard pick up, sort and deliver cans and bottles for recycling.  If you want to donate please drop off your refundable at the shelter or call Gail and Richard at 250-489-2450 and they will pick up from your home or place of business.

Lead image: We have lots of wonderful playful kittens in the shelter and in foster so if you are looking for spayed or neutered kitten who is up to date on vaccinations and is microchipped please come and spend some time at the shelter.

Bubba is a staff favourite around here! He loves to be groomed and pet by all. Bubba LOVES to play! His all time favourite toy is the fake furry mice. He is okay with some other cats but he likes to be in charge. Bubba would do best in a home where he is allowed both indoors and outdoors.

Beefsteak is a handsome little hamster. He is quite active and loves to run around in his ball! Beefsteak is a little jumpy a first but it doesn't take long for him to warm up to new people.

Lacey is a gentle giant. Shes a young doberman who loves people and lots of attention. She does get anxious if left for long periods. Lacey has lots of energy and enjoys playing with other dogs. Lacey should not live with cats. She will need leash training; she really enjoys her walks but pulls extremely hard and will need a very strong adult to work with her. I would recommend a harness or a gentle leader for training.
