Impaired on way to plead guilty to impaired driving
A Canal Flats man April 3 was charged with impaired driving while he drove to the Invermere Provincial Court to plead guilty to a previous impaired driving charge.
At approximately 11 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP initiated a traffic stop in downtown Invermere after a driver displayed some erratic driving behaviour.
The officer queried the vehicle plate and found it to be registered to a prohibited driver with a long list of restrictions in British Columbia.
The officer quickly learned that the driver was in fact the owner of the vehicle, that he was currently on his way to the courthouse to plead guilty to a previous impaired driving offence, and that he could not get a ride so therefor drove himself to Invermere from Canal Flats, reported Cst. Chris Joy of Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment.
The officer also noticed an odor of liquor on the breath of the driver and made a request for a breath sample.
“The driver indicated that he had been drinking with friends until 4 a.m. that morning, which was the reason why he could not find anyone to drive him. The driver blew a sample, which registered above the set limit in British Columbia and was handed another driving prohibition,” Cst. Joy said.
“As the officer didn’t want to waste the court’s time, the driver was given a ride to the court house where he was handed a two-year Criminal Code driving prohibition, and a total fine of $1,950 for the previous impaired driving offence.”
The unidentified man was released with yet another court date to face the prohibited driving charge from April 3.
