Local author up for two national awards

Cranbrook’s Dave Butler is up for two national writing awards for his first novel Full Curl: A Jenny Willson Mystery.

Butler has been shortlisted for the 2018 Arthur Ellis Awards for Excellence in Canadian Crime Writing for ‘First Crime Novel’ and for a Kobo Emerging Writer Prize.

The annual Arthur Ellis Awards by Crime Writers of Canada recognizes the best in mystery, crime, and suspense writing in fiction and non-fiction by Canadian writers.

Puzzle of Pieces, by Sally Hill Brouard, publisher Friesen Press;

Full Curl, by Dave Butler, publisher Dundurn Press;

Ragged Lake, by Ron Corbett, publisher ECW Press;

Flush, by Sky Curtis, publisher Inanna Publications;

Our Little Secret, by Roz Nay, publisher Simon & Schuster Canada, Inc.

Winners will be announced on May 24 at Arthur Ellis Awards Gala in Toronto.

Crime Writers of Canada was founded in 1982 as a professional organization designed to raise the profile of Canadian crime writers. Our members include authors, publishers, editors, booksellers, librarians, reviewers, and literary agents as well as many developing authors. Past winners of the

Rakuten Kobo, in search for the best new books written by debut Canadian authors, announced the shortlist for its fourth annual Emerging Writer Prize. The award was created with the goal of kick-starting the careers of debut authors, with a $10,000 cash prize awarded to a book in each of three categories: Non-Fiction, Literary Fiction and Genre Fiction (Mystery this year).

In addition, each winning author will receive promotional, marketing, and communications support through 2018.

Nominated for the Kobo award are:

The Doll’s Alphabet by Camilla Grudova;

Our Little Secret by Roz Nay;

Full Curl by Dave Butler;

The Lost Ones by Sheena Kamal;

Ragged Lake by Ron Corbett;

The Twelve Man Bilbo Choir by Peter Staadecker.

The winners will be announced on the evening of June 19.
