Elkford Council News

Wildfire risk mitigation and reduction open house today (Dec. 20).

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Dec. 10 District of Elkford council meeting.

District endorses Cumulative Effects Management and Assessment Report

The Elk Valley Cumulative Effects Framework (CEMF) was initiated in 2012 and is led by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. The CEMF Working Group includes representatives from the Ktunaxa Nation Council, mining, forestry and local governments and is supported by subject matter experts.

The purpose of the CEMF is to assess both natural and human- caused land-use changes within the Elk Valley and the resulting cumulative environmental impacts. The Working Group has developed a Cumulative Effects Management and Assessment Report, which identified several priority objectives, each with recommended management actions and mitigation strategies.

Council’s endorsement of the report allows it to be advanced to First Nations and Provincial agencies for review and support. Once finalized, the report will act as a guideline for future land-use planning and permitting, and will require development projects to consider the cumulative effects to the environment.

District supports Elkford Community Endowment Fund’s public honourary display

The district authorized financial assistance in the amount of $1,000 to the Elkford Community Endowment Fund Steering Committee toward a public honourary display in a district facility. The display will honour the founding members of the Endowment Fund. The location of the display will be determined later.

District to submit grant application to support the Community Wildfire Protection Plan

Council supported a grant application to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities’ 2019 Community Resiliency Investment Program. If successful, the funding will be used for operational fuel treatments to mitigate and reduce wildfire risk areas within the District’s boundaries as identified by the Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
