MP joins call for PM to take swift action for farmers
Kootenay-Columbia MP Rob Morrison today (March 2) joined his Conservative Party colleagues in calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take immediate action “to help support Canada’s hard-working farmers in the face of numerous challenges.
“For many months, there has been a dire situation brewing for our hard-working grain famers – a situation that is completely beyond their control. From last year’s tough harvest season, to trade disputes with China, to the Trudeau Carbon Tax, to an early snowfall, to what we’re seeing now – the illegal blockades shutting down our rail system,” MP Morrison (pictured above) said. “Farmers have reached a breaking point.”
“But worst of all, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government have no plan to fix the situation,” he added.
A major concern for farmers is that they will not be able to repay their Advanced Payments Program (APP) loans. Canada’s Conservatives are demanding Justin Trudeau act now to address this situation, Morrison noted in a media release outlining how the Conservatives are calling on the Prime Minister and Liberal Party government to:
- extend the APP repayment deadline and waive the interest charges that are set to kick in on March 31;
- extend the eligibility criteria for the expanded interest-free portion of APP loans, to include all agricultural commodities, and not just canola; and
- implement other policies at the federal government’s disposal that could ease the cash-flow crisis on our farmers.
“Canada’s farming families are struggling to make ends meet, and they are anxious thinking about planting this year’s crops,” Morrison said. “Conservatives will continue to use our strengthened opposition to ensure that farmers get the help they desperately need.”
