St. Margaret’s Cemetery care outlined by city

The City of Fernie manages and maintains St. Margaret’s Cemetery, an important place of remembrance and a valued part of our community’s history.

We would like to thank residents who have recently expressed interest in helping care for and preserve this special place. As interest in volunteer activities grows, we encourage everyone to approach any work with care and respect.

Here are some things to consider:

The city is responsible for overall maintenance and operation of the cemetery grounds, including common areas, trees, and roads. Plot holders and families are responsible for grave markers and their upkeep.

Heavy equipment or machinery should not be used for volunteer activities within the cemetery. The cemetery contains historic monuments, grave sites, and sensitive ground conditions that can be damaged from heavy equipment.

Many gravesites, monuments, and memorials remain important to families and loved ones, and any work on individual sites should be undertaken with the appropriate permission.

Together, we can help ensure St. Margaret’s Cemetery remains a respectful place of remembrance for current and future generations.
