Severe thunderstorm watch for Columbia Valley
Environment Canada has this afternoon issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Columbia Valley.
Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms, with very strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain
While the alert only covers the Columbia Valley, there is also a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the Cranbrook and Kimberley areas, Elk Valley and Kootenay National Park.
The alert covers today and early this evening.
Hot and dry conditions may lead to dry lightning for some areas.
Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
