Elk Valley RCMP Report

By Cst. Debra Katerenchuk

Theft of Catalytic Converter from West Fernie

On February 2, Elk Valley RCMP received a report that a catalytic converter was stolen off a vehicle that was parked near the wastewater treatment plant, along Fernie Ski Hill Road. There was no other reported damage to the vehicle or any other damages/thefts to vehicles in that vicinity.

Thieves drills holes in gas tanks to steal gas

Over the past few weeks, police have been receiving reports of gas tanks being drilled from remote and backcountry parking lots and staging areas. Thieves are not just siphoning gas out of the tank, they are drilling a hole in the tank leading to an expensive repair. The surging gas prices is one thing, but the cost to replace the gas tank is a lot more.

If this has happened to you, please come forward and make a report to the Elk Valley RCMP.

Underage minors drinking in public

Since early February, Elk Valley RCMP have been responding to few calls of intoxicated youths drinking alcohol in public.  With the turn of warmer weather, it has resulted in more youths drinking outside that has increased the visibility of this activity.

Elk Valley RCMP would like to remind the community that alcohol being supplied to underage youth is illegal.

Some of the fines that can be issued under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act (LCLA) are substantive and include:

  • Fine $575 – Sell, give or otherwise supply liquor to a minor: Sec. 77(1)(a) LCLA;
  • Fine $575 – Posses liquor of the purpose of selling, giving, or otherwise supplying to a minor: 77(1)(b) LCLA; and
  • Fine $575 – Allow a minor to consume or posses liquor in or at a place under one’s control, Sec. 77(1)(c) LCAL
  • Fine $230 – Consumption of liquor by minor, Sec. 78(1)(c) LCLA.

When the RCMP deal with intoxicated minors in public, the result is a fine or an education, all of which depends on each situation.  At the end of the day, the Police concern is for the safety of our local youth.
