Info meeting scheduled for Cummings Creek Wildfire

A public information meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 9 regarding the Cummings Creek Wildfire near Sparwood.

“Representatives from the BC Wildfire Service will be in attendance to provide residents with an update on the Cummings Creek fire,” said Regional District of East Kootenay Information Officer Loree Duczek. “This fire is quite visible from Highway 43 and this meeting is a good opportunity for residents to get the latest information.”

The meeting will kick off at 8 p.m. at the Sparwood Recreation & Leisure Centre – Community Hall.

Following the operational update, there will be an opportunity for questions and answers until 8:45 p.m.

The Cummings Creek wildfire has been burning since August 3. It is Wildfire of Note on the BC Wildfire website www.bcwildfire.ca.

As of this morning, August 8, the fire five km west of Sparwood is an estimated 43 hectares.

“Residents of Sparwood might see an influx of fire apparatus, structure protection unit trailers and personnel today. Most of these individuals will be structure protection personnel that will be triaging and assessing properties in the Sparwood area. This work is being done in a proactive manner to establish adequate positioning if required,” BC Wildfire Service reported this morning.

“Currently the community of Sparwood is not imminently threatened, however we want to give our structure protection personnel ample amount of time to deploy structure protection apparatus in the event of the fire progressing closer to the community of Sparwood.”
