Snowfall warning for Cranbrook and Kimberley areas

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Cranbrook/Kimberley southern East Kootenay areas.

Heavy snow is forecast for today and tonight as an Arctic front moves across the area. Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm is expected by Saturday morning, with some areas such as Kimberley and Gold Creek already exceeding that volume.

“Snow will begin today and become heavy at times tonight as an Arctic front moves across the East Kootenay. Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm is expected by Saturday morning, with the heaviest amounts near Kimberley. The passage of the front will also bring gusty winds, temporarily reducing visibility in blowing snow. Areas susceptible to wind are likely to see the worst conditions in blowing snow,” Environment Canada stated.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Environment Canada is also warning about an incoming cold spell in the forecast for most of B.C.

Temperatures will be five to 10 degrees colder than normal for this time of year in the southern interior.

Temperatures are expected to gradually rise late next week, in early February. However, there remains significant uncertainty on the timing of a return to seasonal temperatures, Environment Canada said.
