Wings over the Rockies arriving soon

It’s almost spring and in the Upper Columbia Valley that means Wings over the Rockies Nature Festival is just around the corner.

When we spot the first robin or hear the first osprey call, it’s time to clear the calendar for May 8 to 14 to make room for some of the 100 plus scheduled events. In-field excursions, luncheon and evening presentations, a Spring Soirée, a music concert – there are so many ways to experience and celebrate the rich and varied ecosystems and wildlife that inhabit it.

“Wildlife & Landscapes – Exploring Connections” is the theme for Wings over the Rockies 2023. Events focus on the interconnections of wildlife, landscapes and people. Many of the events will help us understand how geology influences where animals and plants live and how they, in turn, affect the landscape.

Event leaders and presenters are biologists, naturalists, conservationists, and birding enthusiasts – all with incredible knowledge of the habitat of the Columbia Valley. As volunteers, they contribute time, energy and expertise to share their appreciation for nature and Wings is most grateful.

Dr. Dale Leckie is this year’s keynote speaker. A geologist, scientist, speaker and best-selling author of nature tour books for the public, Dr. Leckie, a lover of nature from an early age, encourages people to get out, explore and understand the landscapes of Western Canada.

His most recent book, The Scenic Geology of Alberta: A Roadside Touring and Hiking Guide, topped best seller lists. Dr. Leckie’s upcoming book explores the close relationship between geology and wildlife. His presentation will give us more understanding of the world around us.

Wings over the Rockies Nature Festival runs from Monday, May 8 to Sunday, May 14. The Wings website, www.wingsovertherockies.org,  will post a preview of the Calendar of Events, with descriptions and details on Thursday, March 30.

Experienced Wings participants study the preview, choose the events they’re interested in, and are prepared to purchase tickets when they go on sale on Tuesday, April 11 at 10 a.m.

Many events sell out quickly, 70% of tickets are sold on the first day, so be ready to zero in on your choices. All tickets are sold on the website.
