Habitat restoration work at Olive Lake

Parks Canada aquatics specialists will be conducting critical habitat restoration work at Olive Lake in Kootenay National Park this month in support of westslope cutthroat trout (WSCT), a species at-risk.

Olive Lake (pictured) will undergo its first treatment of rotenone – a fish toxicant derived from plants – as a measure to remove non-native fish from the lake.

As of Tuesday October 8, to complete aquatic restoration work:

  • An area closure will be in place;
  • A no stopping zone will be in effect on Highway 93 in the Olive Lake area on October 9.

Safety measures will remain in place until the aquatic restoration work is complete.

Affected areas will include:

  • Area closure: Cobb Lake Trail, Olive Lake and the Olive Lake Day-use area including its trails, facilities, and parking as well the outflow Swede creek to the confluence of the Kootenay River from October 8-14. This temporary closure will merge into Olive Lake’s annual seasonal closure, taking place from mid-October to early May.
  • No stopping zone: From October 9 – 12, a no stopping zone will be in effect on Highway 93 from Kindersley trailhead up to and including Cobb Lake trailhead.
