Extreme cold warning for Kootenay and Yoho

Environment Canada this morning (Feb. 6) issued an extreme cold warning for Kootenay and Yoho national parks.

An arctic airmass is expected to remain for several days, until at least Saturday region-wide but the two nearby national parks are expected to be the coldest locations.

“An arctic airmass combined with moderate winds are giving wind chill values near minus 35. Temperatures may moderate slightly on Sunday,” Environment Canada said.

Bundle up everywhere

Region-wide, overnight temperatures are expected to drop to the -20s and possibly into the -30s tonight and tomorrow (Feb. 6 and 7).

Along with this lingering deep freeze will be plenty sunshine, so there’s that.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Check on older family, friends and neighbours,” Environment Canada advised.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
