Extreme cold warning for local national parks

Environment Canada has today (Feb. 10) issued another extreme cold warning for Kootenay and Yoho national park areas.

A prolonged period of cold wind chills is expected from now through Tuesday morning (Feb. 11).

“An Arctic air mass combined with moderate winds, will result in wind chill values dropping below -35 degrees Celsius during the overnight and morning hours over the next few days. Temperatures are expected to gradually rise starting Tuesday as the Arctic air retreats,” Environment Canada stated.

Overnight low temperatures elsewhere in the region are expected to be in the -20 to -30 C range, with risk of frostbite.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” Environment Canada advises.

“Keep moving to maintain your body heat and seek shelter from the wind. Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up.”
