18 people rescued after Wild Horse bridge washout

On August 2, at approximately 5:22 p.m., Cranbrook RCMP received dispatch of a Garmin emergency activation, indicating distress approximately 13 kilometres up the Wildhorse Forest Service Road.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that 18 individuals, traveling in vehicles and side-by-sides, were stranded on the far side of a significant bridge washout and unable to safely return.

Search and Rescue (SAR), Emergency Management BC (EMBC), and the RCMP Police Dog Service (PDS) Officer were immediately engaged. Due to the terrain and lack of road access beyond the washout, a coordinated aerial response was initiated.

The individuals were safely flown out of the area by helicopter. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

“We are thankful for the quick action and professionalism of all responding agencies,” said Cranbrook RCMP Detachment commander S/Sgt. Barry Graham.

“This incident is a reminder of how rapidly conditions in remote areas can change. We encourage anyone venturing into the backcountry to always carry emergency communication devices and be prepared for the unexpected.”

The RCMP would like to thank SAR, EMBC, and all involved responders for their swift and effective efforts.
