Parks Canada asks: Please help protect our rivers
This summer, Parks Canada staff removed approximately 15 human-made rock structures from the Kootenay River in Kootenay National Park to restore natural water flow and keep fish safe.
We know these rock stacks and dams often come from a place of curiosity and enjoyment — but they can have serious impacts on river life.
Even small rock dams can:
- Block fish from swimming to important habitat;
- Trap fish when water levels drop;
- Disturb sensitive riverbeds and eggs.
The Kootenay River is home to special native fish, including Bull Trout, Westslope Cutthroat Trout, and Mountain Whitefish. These species rely on free-flowing water to survive.
How you can help
When exploring near rivers:
- Leave rocks where they are;
- Enjoy natural features as you find them;
- Share this message with others.
Together, we can keep rivers healthy and protect the incredible species that live here — thank you for caring for this place.
