Fernie netminder makes Team of the Week

The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) is pleased to announce its Team of the Weekfor the period ending Jan.4.

Goalie

Leo den Besten – Fernie Ghostriders

Den Besten turned aside 51 of 53 shots against the Kimberley Dynamiters during their Christmas Classic series. In the opening game he relieved Kael Svenson and stopped 18 of 20 shots in 28:20 of action. He was unbeatable in the second game, a 5-0 win with a 33-save performance. He posted a 1.36 goals against average with a .962 save percentage.

Forwards

Cameron Oien – Spokane Braves

The co-captain was a factor in three straight wins against the Nelson Leafs, Castlegar Rebels and Grand Forks Border Bruins with two goals and four assists. Oien scored twice, including the overtime winner, against the Rebels in a 3-2 final. Then he displayed his playmaking ability with three assists in their 6-3 win over the Border Bruins, including on the winner. Oien was +5 while playing an average of 20:10 a game.

Will Bell – Princeton Posse

Bell tallied three goals and two assists in back-to-back games against the Revelstoke Grizzlies. In their 6-3 come-from-behind win, the Dunmore, Alta. native had two goals, both in the second period, and three points. He was +3 while playing an average of 23:47 a game.

Isaiah Bagri – Quesnel River Rush

Against the Kamloops Storm in a 4-1 win, Bagri netted the insurance goal, then added an empty-netter. Then against the Chase Heat in a 3-2 win, the 5-11, 170-pound forward set up the 1-1 goal and netted the winner with his 17th of the season. He was +3 while playing an average of 21:37 a game.

Defenceman

Tobin Mikkelsen – Spokane Braves

In their three wins, Mikkelsen had two goals and three assists. In a 3-2 overtime win over the Rebels, Mikkelsen set up all three goals, including Oien’s winner. He followed that performance up with a two-goal night against the Grand Forks Border Bruins in a 6-3 win, scoring the winner. He was +4 and played an average of 26:32.

Gairen Bona – Merritt Centennials

The Calgary native had a goal and two assists to help them earn consecutive wins against the Sicamous Eagles, 8-3 and 4-3 in a shootout. In the shootout win he scored the opening goal. Bona was +4.
