Minister of State Brittny Anderson meets with council

As part of her visit through the region, Kootenay Central MLA Brittny Anderson, Minister of State for Local Governments and Rural Communities, made a stop in Cranbrook Thursday to meet with council to discuss several important issues to the city.

Discussions focused on provincial support for RCMP services, including the balance between municipal and rural policing resources, and the impact on city taxpayers.

Council also highlighted Cranbrook’s role as a regional service centre and the growing demand for provincial services without proper provincial support to help with the impacts these provincial services are having on the community. Advocacy for the creation of a youth rehab/detox centre for the region was also discussed.

Council also shared its concerns with Bill M216 – a proposed BC private members bill designed to help speed up housing development by requiring local governments to accept technical plans certified by regulated professionals (like engineers, architects) without internal review and approvals.

“People want to see their leaders working together to strengthen and protect services, address challenges and pursue opportunities,” said Minister Anderson.

“I appreciate that Cranbrook city council took the time to connect with me about local concerns and priorities, and I look forward to bringing what I heard back to my colleagues.”

“We appreciate Minister Anderson taking the time to meet with us, giving council the opportunity to share our local concerns and priorities,” said Mayor Wayne Price. “It is important that we continue to keep the communication channels open between the City and the Province so we can keep advocating for the services and supports Cranbrook needs.”
