Kimberley climbs in KIJHL Power Rankings
The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) is pleased to announce its Power Rankings for Week 17.
The Merritt Centennials split their weekend games beginning with an 8-1 win over the Sicamous Eagles. Kaden Wilkins led with two goals (9), including the winner and Tyler Picha made 19 saves for the victory. Their second game was a 4-3 shootout loss to the Revelstoke Grizzlies that lasted 10 shootout rounds after they were unable to protect their 3-1 lead. Callum MacLean led with two points and Sam Saskiw made 49 saves and stopped eight of 10 in the shootout. The Centennials are ninth overall in the KIJHL with a record of 20-11-2-2.
The Beaver Valley Nitehawks outscored their opponents by a combined score of 20-6 over the weekend. They defeated the Osoyoos Coyotes 9-2 with the help of a four-goal first period. Brady Magarrell led with five points, including two goals (31) as he set up Nathan Planger’s winner. Karsten Hugenholtz stopped 22 of 24 shots. Then the Nitehawks picked up an 11-4 win over the Nelson Leafs. They scored five goals in the third period. Jonas Bourchier scored twice (12) including the winner. Landan Uzeloc stopped 30 of 34 shots. Magarrell led with four points. The Nitehawks are third overall with a record of 28-8.
The Grand Forks Border Bruins earned a pair of wins over the weekend. They started with a 5-0 shutout against the Leafs. Brandon Gray’s 11th goal won the game, while Thomas Samborski saved 22 shots for his third shutout of the season. Then the Border Bruins handed the Spokane Braves a 10-4 loss. Austin Tellefson (1G, 5A) and Levi Astill (3G, 2A) combined for 11 points as Tellefson started the play leading to Astill’s winner. Eric Kahl made 26 saves. The Border Bruins are sixth overall with a record of 25-12-0-1.
The Williams Lake Mustangs earned a pair of wins at home starting with a 7-3 win over the Quesnel River Rush. Asher Lucas had a game to remember. He set up Declan Pocock’s winner late in the second period, and had two goals (8) and five assists. His seven-point performance was one shy of tying the KIJHL record. Kaelen Swanson had a goal and four points, while Jaxson Dikur was very good in net, making 42 saves. They then blanked the Kamloops Storm 6-0. Dikur was stellar earning a 41-save shutout – his first in the KIJHL – while Logan Hauk popped in the winner 39 seconds into the game with his 21st of the season. Pocock had three points, including two goals (14), and set up Hauk’s winner. The Mustangs are eighth overall at 21-11-1-3.
The Kimberley Dynamiters split their two games last week. They lost in a shootout to the Rockies 4-3. Brayden Schwartz scored his 22nd goal, while Carter Coutu had two assists and Mason Hillier stopped 33 of 36 shots. The Dynamiters trailed 3-1 heading into the third period against the Castlegar Rebels and got the winner from Schwartz (24) with two minutes remaining. Adam Kisilevich earned the win with 26 saves, while Schwartz led with two goals. Connor Grainger also had two assists. The Dynamiters are fourth overall in the league at 26-7-2-2.
