Marie “Matt” STEARNS
Marie Elizabeth (Matt) Stearns
March 21, 1990 – March 21, 2026
It is with profound sadness that the family of Marie Elizabeth (Matt) Stearns announces her passing on March 21, 2026, at the age of 36.
Matt was born in Sparwood, British Columbia, to Catherine and John Stearns. She was a dedicated student and consistently an honour roll recipient throughout her school years.
Matt was a gifted and lively musician whose energy was unmistakable. Largely self-taught, she developed her talents across multiple instruments and shared her music widely, often through busking. Whether singing or playing fiddle and violin—each with her own unique style—along with guitar, harmonica, or piano, she had a way of drawing people in and leaving a lasting impression wherever she went.
Matt was passionate about healthy cooking and baking and loved experimenting with new recipes and sharing her creations.
She was known for her compassion and empathy, particularly toward those facing hardship, and approached others with kindness and without judgment.
Matt was deeply passionate about the environment and lived her values in a meaningful way. She embraced a lifestyle rooted in simplicity and sustainability, enjoying hiking and biking both for recreation and as her preferred modes of transportation. She travelled extensively across Canada and throughout the United States, and wholeheartedly supported thrift shops, libraries, and natural food stores, living by the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Through her travels, her music, and her way of living, Matt touched many lives and formed meaningful connections with people wherever she went.
She is survived by her mother, Catherine Stearns; her sisters and brother, Suzanne, Amanda, Justine, Robyn, and Lee; and her nieces and nephews, Ashley, Trevor, Chiara, Connor, Caleb, Caroline, Spencer, and Luna. She was predeceased by her father, John Stearns, and her dog, Rune.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family kindly asks for privacy as they support each other.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honour Matt’s memory are encouraged to be gentle and show kindness to others; be respectful of the environment; reach out when support is needed; and remember that you are not alone.
