CORFA marking 50 years with special tree dedication

This year marks the special milestone 50th Anniversary of the College of the Rockies Faculty Association (CORFA).

To celebrate this, CORFA will be planting and dedicating a Japanese Lilac Tree at the Cranbrook campus of the College of the Rockies on Thursday, June 11, at 10 a.m.

The tree will be planted in the garden to the left of the main entrance to Kootenay Centre. The ceremony will be followed by refreshments in the main entrance front foyer. All employee groups at the college as well as anyone in the community is welcome to attend.

The college itself opened in 1975, and the Faculty Association was certified shortly after, in March 1976.  It was first known as the East Kootenay Community College Faculty Association.

The first collective agreement with the college was the 1976-1977 contract. The first Faculty Association president, and also the first faculty hired at the college, was Joe Selby.

CORFA is proud of its approximately 150 members. We also honour our many past members.

Today’s members benefit from the hard work of past faculty, who worked endlessly to establish good working conditions for instructors and provide quality education for students. Standing on their shoulders has given CORFA the foundation to continue to grow and be a productive and positive force for our college, its students, and our community.

On May 1, CORFA hosted a successful 50th Anniversary dinner for all CORFA members and alumni at the Colombo Lodge in Cranbrook.

Our June 11 tree-planting ceremony is an extension of our 50th Anniversary celebration.
