Cominco Gardens nears centennial refurbished
Kimberley’s Cominco Gardens has been beautifully refurbished and is ready to be enjoyed by future generations of Kimberlites and visitors.
City of Kimberley officials and guests celebrated a grand opening of the Townsite located gardens on Wednesday, July 15.
The five-hectare park was originally established in 1927 by Cominco (Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co.) with a business-focussed aim – to showcase “Elephant Brand” fertilizer, made from by-products from Sullivan Mine ore.
The garden park was gifted to the city in 1987 and has been municipally managed since.
In 2024 the city began the refurbishment work, which includes a second accessible entrance way with rock work, a central plaza/pergola and a soundly enclosed rose garden – safe from the ravages of deer.
The newly enhanced garden park remains a work in progress, with plenty of canvas still available to be filled, but one of Kimberley’s longest running attractions has again taken root.
