Inquest being held in Brisco fatality crash

The BC Coroners Service announced today (Sept. 22) that it will hold a public inquest into the deaths of Chul Lee, Kwang Cha and Chungjic Koh, who were killed in a bizarre crash north of Brisco last January.

On Jan. 19, 2011, Lee was driving a vehicle carrying Cha and Koh. The vehicle was southbound on Highway 95 north of Brisco when it was struck on two occasions by two separate trucks.

The inquest is scheduled from Monday, June 25 until Friday, June 29, 2012.

“This inquest has been called under Sec. 18 (3) (b) of the Coroners Act 2007 as it is believed these deaths may have resulted from a dangerous circumstance, and a coroner’s jury could offer recommendations to prevent future similar deaths,” noted a Coroners Service press release.

Presiding coroner T. E. Chico Newell and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future.

The inquest will be conducted at Invermere’s Provincial Court (645-7th. Ave.), beginning on Monday, June 25 at 9:30 a.m.

An inquest is a formal court process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death. The British Columbia Coroners Service is an independent fact-finding agency that may not make any finding of legal responsibility.
