SD5 welcomes new superintendent

School District No. 5 (SD5) Board of Education is pleased to announce the hiring of Lynn Hauptman as the new Superintendent for the district.

Hauptman’s position as Superintendent is effective August 2013. Hauptman also plans to spend a week touring the district in June.

According to board chair, Frank Lento, the board engaged the services of Make a Future –a recruitment initiative created by the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) — to hire Hauptman.

“We had a narrow window to post for Superintendent last summer when our former Superintendent, Bill Gook, tendered his resignation,” explained Lento. “We were fortunate to have Bendina Miller, former School District 6 (Rocky Mountain) Superintendent, agree to take on the position for one year to give us time to find the right leader for our district, using the services of Make a Future.”

“Bendina has left some pretty big shoes to fill,” says Lento, “but Lynn shares the same high standards and strong work ethic for which Bendina is known. I believe the transition will be pretty seamless.”

Perhaps that’s because Hauptman worked in SD6 from 1995 – 2003 where Miller served as superintendent for a few of those years. Hauptman was also the site manager/principal responsible for the completion and smooth transition of students to the newly built McKim Middle School in Kimberley in 2002.

According to Lento, Hauptman’s experience is especially beneficial to SD5 as the district has been focused on the replacement of their largest high school, Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS), for the past four years.

“Lynn has experience with both school replacement and neighbourhood learning centres,” says Lento, citing Hauptman’s successful partnership with the District of Port Edward while Superintendent of Prince Rupert (SD52), to develop the new Port Edward Community School –a neighbourhood learning centre concept—this past year.

In addition to her experience with school replacement, Hauptman is focused on improving student achievement results. During her time as Superintendent of the Prince Rupert School District, Lynn developed a strong culture of inquiry-based teaching and learning that encouraged positive, inclusive, safe and caring classrooms and improved learning outcomes. She looks forward to continuing that work here in SD5.

Prior to accepting the position of Superintendent for SD52 in 2009, Hauptman spent time as a District Principal and Director of Instruction in the Okanagan Skaha (SD67) following her departure from SD6 in 2003.

Hauptman is married to husband Glenn and has three grown children. She says she’s looking forward to coming back to the East Kootenay.

“My husband and I are very excited to re-connect with old friends and of course I look forward to working with the amazing staff and students of School District 5.”
