What’s Up – Wild Strawberry

By Larry Halverson/Friends of Kootenay

Wild Strawberry can grow just about anywhere. In Kootenay National Park they are found in valley bottoms to subalpine meadows.

Many animals eat the strawberry fruit and help spread the plant by pooping seeds in new areas. Strawberry plants also reproduce through long runners that reach out to find a patch of bare ground to root a new plantlet. Strawberries growing in the shade produce mostly leaves with few fruit but they fruit abundantly in open meadows where the sun shines.
