Shots fired as stolen vehicle driver arrested

rcmplogoShots were fired by a RCMP officer today after a suspect vehicle pulled over north of Wasa drove toward the officer.

On the July 5 at 1:30 p.m. Cranbrook RCMP responded to a report of a stolen truck from Van Horne Street in Cranbrook.

Patrols were conducted and the truck was located on Highway 93/95 north of the Wasa turnoff.

When the suspect male driver was confronted by a police officer who was on foot, he drove towards the officer forcing him to take evasive action to avoid being struck while firing his sidearm at the vehicle, which disabled it enough that when the driver sped away, police were able to stop the suspect several kilometres further down the road.  RCMP took the suspect driver and a female passenger into custody without further incident.

The suspect driver was not local but known to police elsewhere and the female passenger was detained as a person of interest. No one was injured as a result of this incident and the police investigation is continuing.
