A referendum asking District of Invermere voters if they support borrowing up to $5.6 million to build a new community centre and a poll querying the public’s appetite for another deer cull were conducted last week and finalized yesterday, Nov. 2.

Mayor Gerry Taft reported via Facebook that unofficial results show that 749 people favour borrowing and 245 do not want the town to borrow funds for a new centre at the site of the old David Thompson Secondary School.

A similar breakdown – 729 in favour; 259 opposed is the result thus far on the deer cull question.

“Thank you voters in Invermere for the clear direction on two important issues. Now let’s move forward together,” Taft stated.

He also noted in remains unclear as to who will pay court costs following the recently decided BC Supreme Court decision backing the district over the Invermere Deer Protection Society (IDPS).

“The DOI lawyer will be submitting an argument in favour of Shane Suman and the IDPS being responsible for costs. It will be up to the judge if costs are awarded. And it will be a whole different story on trying to collect any costs,” Taft said.
