Oranges & Sunshine opening Columbia Valley Cinefest

The Columbia Valley Cinefest is opening Tuesday, Nov.8 with a showing of Oranges & Sunshine.

Set in the 1980s, the film tells the story of a social worker, Margaret Humphreys, (Emily Watson, Punch Drunk Love, Gosford Park) who learns that thousands of children in the care of British Social Services were illegally and silently deported to Australia in the 1940s.

Show time is 7 p.m. at Pynelogs Cultural Centre in Invermere.

Following up on Tuesday, Nov. 15 is The First Grader. Based on a true story, the film is an inspiring tale about the universal human desire to improve ourselves. Kimani Manuge is an 84-year-old Mau Mau veteran who shows up on the doorstep of a rural school after the government of Kenya announces it will offer free primary education. Showtime is 7 p.m. at Pynelogs.
