Local man killed in KNP crash

Police seek video and witness information

BC Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park (KNP), and police are asking for dashcam video or any witnesses who may have seen a man and a woman associated to a black Nissan Maxima at a liquor establishment in Banff, Alberta.

On October 2, at 11:10 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park, just north of the Floe Lake trailhead.

A black Nissan Maxima was found on its side after leaving the roadway and traveling down an embankment. The female driver was not seriously hurt. However, a 23-year-old Invermere man, who was a passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision and have not ruled out any factors that may have contributed to it,” said Sgt. Brett Reiben with the BC Highway Patrol in Cranbrook. “Investigators believe there may be witnesses who stopped at the collision, or witnessed the events leading up to it, or the vehicle’s operation before the crash, but have not yet spoken to police.”

Police are interested in events surrounding the collision between 9:30 p.m. and 12 a.m. on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park, or at restaurants or bars in Banff, Alberta, around dinnertime on October 2.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, has video, observed the black Nissan’s driving, or knows the driver and observed her behaviour in the hours before the crash, is asked to call BC Highway Patrol Cranbrook at 250-420-4244 and reference file (2100) 2026-2873.
