Highway travel ill-advised at this time

Continuing heavy rain and snow in higher elevations, mixed with near freezing temperatures are making driving treacherous throughout the East Kootenay at this time and highway travel is ill-advised.

Drive BC and Tourism Radium are advising against travel along Highway 93 through Kootenay National Park at this time.

Highway 93 through the national park is listed by Drive BC as slushy with slippery sections (both directions) from Radium Hot Springs to Vermilion Crossing, as of 9 a.m. this morning.

Highway 95 heading north from Radium to Brisco is also listed as slushy with slippery sections.

Radium to Invermere along Highway 93/95 is also slushy with slippery sections, as is the strip of highway from Invermere to Canal Flats. Additionally, Highway 93/95 from Canal Flats to the junction of 95A is also listed as slushy with slippery sections. Pay special attention around Skookumchuk for black ice.

Elk Valley highway conditions are no better.

Highway 43 between Elkford and Sparwood has compact Snow with slippery sections and Highway 3 between Fernie and Sparwood also has compact snow and slippery sections, especially just west of Sparwood. There is also compact snow and slippery sections along the 21.4 km strip of highway between Sparwood and the Alberta border.

Additionally, there are slippery sections being reported between Elko and Fernie along Highway 3.
