All that remains is a referendum vote

It’s up to Elko residents now.

Regional District of East Kootenay board of directors unanimously passed the third readings of Bylaws No. 2257 and 2258 on July 8, allowing for the establishment of fire protection service in the Elko area, as well as providing permission to borrow $825,000.

The bylaws now go to the Inspector of Municipalities for approval before returning to the region for adoption.

However, before there can be any further steps taken, Elko residents must vote in a referendum that will run in conjunction with local government elections in November.

Some snags still remain on the funding front for Elko fire protection, noted Electoral Area B director Heath Slee, and there’s been a bonus, too.

“Residents have done significant amounts of work in Elko to reduce the costs,” Slee said, pointing out that a pumper truck has been donated and they are working in partnership with Elk River Lodge to utilize the old school.

”It’s a crucial time” for Elko, Slee told fellow directors while urging them to vote in favour of the third readings.
