Free piano recital/lecture at college

Calgary pianist Allen Reiser will give a free lecture/recital of Liszt piano music entitled Facets of Liszt on Friday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the College of the Rockies’ Lecture Theatre.  Reiser will present a number of pieces by the virtuosic Hungarian composer highlighting different periods and aspects of his piano style.

The program will include perhaps Liszt’s best-known work, the Sonata in B minor as well as the Hungarian Rhapsody No.13 in a minor, two concert etudes, a contemplative piece called Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude and a transcription of Bach’s Fantasy and Fugue in g minor, one of many works Liszt transcribed for piano.

Reiser said, “I enjoy this program very much. I feel at home playing Liszt although he is probably my exact opposite, personality-wise.”

Reiser has performed with various orchestras in England and Canada and recital engagements have taken him to nearly every major centre in Western Canada. He is a pianist of diverse musical interests with a particular interest in Canadian piano music and the music of Franz Liszt.

His first released CD, A Canadian Piano Album, was nominated for a 2001 Prairie Music Award in the category of Outstanding Classical Recording. A second CD, Sonatinas and Little Sonatas, was released in June of 2009; “…a wonderful collection of intermediate-level sonatas and sonatinas.”  (Clavier Jan/Feb 2010) His Sonatina album was the basis for a book published in Germany simply titled Allen Reiser, which focuses on the composers present on that CD.

Reiser is no stranger to East Kootenay audiences. He has been a featured soloist with the Symphony of the Kootenays and has also presented a number of solo recitals and workshops in the area. He has adjudicated at the local Festival of the Performing Arts and taught a number of students and teachers from the East Kootenay.

The recital, sponsored by the College of the Rockies Guest Lecture fund, will start at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 17.  Admission is free, but seating is limited so please be sure to arrive early.
