$10,000 for new College of the Rockies’ award
The United Commercial Travellers (UCT), formerly the Associated Canadian Travellers (and more casually known as ‘the Cavepeople’ in regional parades), has donated $10,000 to College of the Rockies for a Robert Field Memorial Bursary. The bursary will support local students, with financial need, who are continuing in a full-time health program at COTR, preferably the Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Licensed Practical Nursing programs.
College of the Rockies’ Financial Aid and Awards Officer Lois Murray said, “The College is very grateful to the many local and regional businesses, organizations and clubs who donate money to support our students. The College matches permanent award donations so this $10,000 will be doubled to $20,000, which will be invested, and the interest will create a new $500 award for next year and years to come.”
The Cranbrook Chapter of the UCT was granted its charter in May of 1956 from the Canada-wide association, one of whose objectives is: ‘to be of service to the communities in which the clubs are located.’
Perry Kraft explained, “The bursary is named after Robert Field who was a 39-year member of our club. He served in many executive positions and was always ready to help in any way he could. He was also the Chaplain for the Grand Council which encompasses clubs from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario.”
Kraft continued, “Bob was heavily involved in coaching different youth teams of hockey, soccer and baseball in Cranbrook. Music was also very important to him; he played in several bands both in Cranbrook and while he was in the army. He passed away in March of 2011 after a long illness. He is missed by those who knew him and we feel it is fitting he be remembered through this bursary.”
The 2011/2012 scholarship, bursary and award applications are available now and students are encouraged to apply online. The application is open to all full-time students and can be found by following the links on the student portal, the financial aid webpage or directly at https://incotr2.cotr.bc.ca/application Deadline to apply is Friday, March 2. “It’s free money!” Murray concluded.
