Advanced Woodblock Printing: Multi-Coloured Reduction Prints

Friday and Saturday / March 23-24 / 7-9:30 p.m. and 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Location: Clawhammer Press
For those who have taken the ‘Introduction to Wood Block printing,’ this takes the process a step further. Reduction prints are multi-coloured prints carved from the same block. The final result is a truly limited edition print because the original block is ‘destroyed’ in the process, leaving only the final colour printing surface on the original block. The process takes some planning and forethought. The instructor will guide students through the steps and planning. Materials are included in the cost of the workshop. Carving tools will be provided. Taught by Michael Hepher, owner/operator of Clawhammer Press.

Watercolour Basics – Getting Started

Pamm will demonstrate and instruct on the wonders of this so-called elusive media through her guidance of the techniques that make up this form of painting. Learn washes, glazing with wet and dry brushes, colour mixing, and brush strokes. You will leave this great class with an understanding of and the ability to start your very own water colour journey!

Intermediate Hand-setting Type – taking it to the next level

Friday and Saturday / April 20-21 / 7-9:30 p.m. and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Location: Clawhammer Press. Required pre-requisite: Intro to hand-set type course. This workshop will discuss more in-depth the history of typography, advanced techniques, and creating more complex or multi-coloured typographic projects. Students who enjoyed the basic course will be able to apply these skills, and add some new knowledge about typographic techniques, 2 and 3 colour projects, and experimenting with new and creative ideas.

Arts Station and a Visiting Artist

The Arts Station is seeking the donation of a house or condo to host a visiting artist in the spring or fall shoulder season of 2012. The ideal home would include the following: Walkable to downtown and to the schools; large enough for a small family with a kitchen, laundry facilities and so on. A living area large enough to host an eight-person workshop.

A sheet on the proposed program and the intended involvement of the artist in the community is available at The Arts Station. We are looking for one home. The spring season will be mid-April to the end of May. Fall season will be mid-October to the end of November. The artist residency will be three to five weeks depending on the artist.
If you have a house or condo that meets these simple criteria, please contact:
Courtney Baker at 423-4842 or by email at [email protected]

The Arts Station Visiting Artist Residency

Fernie sits relatively isolated from mainstream art communities provincially and within Canada as a whole. Much of our artistic input arrives via remote media. This proposal would bring an artist to Fernie for an extended residency of three to six weeks. In this time, the artist would work in the schools a day or so a week, with adults one night a week and have dedicated time to work on their own personal project. At the end of the residency period, the artist would give a public performance or reading.
Residencies would be in the ‘off season,’ so we could offer housing to the artist and provide the condo/home owner a tax receipt in return for the use of their unit if they wish. The housing would need to be in town, not at the ski area.

Initially, the artists would be writers. The writing community is fairly connected internally. The residency information would be distributed through BC Writers Guild, the Places for Writers web site and other such interactive media.
A board of review would be set up to vet the applications and formally offer the residency.
If this works for writers, in the future we could offer the residencies to artists in other fields. There is the possibility of a studio space for two or three-dimensional artists after the winter.
