Big top in the small rink
Circus Gatti, out of California, brought a scaled-down show to the City of Fernie last Sunday, July 17.
Sans the elephants, ponies and some high-wire acts, the travelling extravaganza played to about 200 people (mostly kids) at the Fernie Memorial Arena, at both of its shows on Sunday afternoon. Kids squealed and oohed and aahed and giggled at the antics of Laughing Leo the Clown, as well as at a host of physically demanding and colourful acts.
The show culminated with a dazzling ‘Cage of Death’ motocross ride, in which a rider spun around inside a metal cage. That was thrilling enough, but when the show’s emcee stepped inside the cage and had the rider whiz around his head and shoulders, it was a true reminder of the magic and often extremely daring antics associated with the traditional three-ring circus.
