City approves permits for multi-family developments
The City of Cranbrook March 5 unanimously approved development permits for two multi-family development projects.

The first was a steep slope development permit for a 58 multi-family residential unit development on a property located on 30th Avenue North and the second was for four 2.5 storey, three bedroom townhouse style dwelling units located at 1860 Kelowna Crescent.
“I’m very excited to see this proposal,” said Mayor Wayne Stetski of the 30th Ave., N. proposal. “It will fill a need for Cranbrook.”
He also praised the smaller project for local innovation, quoting Corporate Service’s report to council, which notes, “As a point of interest, the applicant indicates that in addition to conventional natural gas heating systems for the units, an innovative heating-assist system will also be installed, which is intended to reduce overall heating costs and carbon emissions. Specifically, a heat pump utilizing ‘tempered air’ as an air source will be installed. The heating innovation is based on research completed by the principles’ daughter (Keltie Murdoch) and was recognized with an award in the 2011 National Science Fair in Toronto, as well as being displayed as part of the recent (Mount) Baker High School science fair.”
Council members were glad to pass development permits for the city.
“There’s a need for it. It’s great to see a couple of these things come forward,” remarked Coun. Diana J Scott.
Coun. Gerry Warner agreed. Pointing out that there is “a dearth” of townhomes in Cranbrook, he asked, “How could we say no?”
