Liquid Waste Management Plan out for approval
The City of Fernie has applied to the Ministry of Environment for approval of the city’s Liquid Waste Management Plan.
The purpose of a Liquid Waste Management Plan (LWMP) is to establish direction for the safe and environmentally sustainable treatment and discharge of the City of Fernie’s municipal wastewater. The LWMP identifies Fernie’s liquid waste related issues and concerns, evaluates potential options to address them and selects the preferred solutions.

“Wastewater Management is important to everyone, the Liquid Waste Management Plan examines the issues and guides us into the future,” said Mayor Mary Giuliano, adding, “This plan, thanks to the input from citizens, businesses, technical experts and other levels of government, will provide us with the tools to ensure there is sufficient capacity in our wastewater systems to accommodate growth in our community for years to come.”
The LWMP will deliver a number of benefits, including helping Fernie to better:
Protect the environment;
Ensure public health;
Identify and meet wastewater reduction goals;
Provide access to funding for important community wastewater initiatives; and
Protect our financial investment in wastewater infrastructure by ensuring we proactively deal with issues before they become costly problems.
City staff undertook extensive consultation with the public and the Ktunaxa First Nation, which was an integral part of developing solutions for the city’s LWMP process. This consultation took place through a series of meetings and information sessions, community surveys, and information booths that were set up at City Hall and the Fernie Aquatic Centre.
Once approved by the Ministry of Environment, the plan will direct all future municipal wastewater infrastructure upgrading activities.
