Board backs CRIA as preferred location for WestJet over Fairmont
The Columbia Valley Airport Society and Fairmont Hot Springs Airport would like to attract Westjet Regional Service and recently asked the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors for a letter of support.
However, on May 5, following a May 4 Committee-of-the-Whole meeting, RDEK board directors unanimously voted to note that they see Canadian Rockies International Airport as the preferred location for establishing Westjet service to the East Kootenay.
A letter stating that will be sent to WestJet, which recently announced it will soon begin regional service to smaller communities.
Fairmont Hot Springs Airport manager Shawn Jestley stated in a letter to the board that such a regional air service as offered by Westjet would “greatly help the north end of the valley in respect to regular and consistent movement of our residents and guests to the valley, as well as our residents who require travel to both Calgary and Vancouver on business. The service would greatly aid people who have to travel to Calgary and Vancouver for medical treatment not available in the area.”
Jestley concluded, “With this airport being a fully lit 24/7 operation we could host any time schedule that could be proposed.”
