People throwing lit cigarettes away: RCMP concerned

On August 15, at 8:52 a.m., Cranbrook RCMP received a complaint from two witnesses who were
driving on Highway 3/95 at Moyie towards Creston.

rcmp logo glossyThey witnessed the car ahead of them toss a cigarette out the window. The cigarette was observed to be lit and when it hit the ground sparks were clearly visible. The registered owner of the vehicle has been identified and this matter is currently under investigation.

Cranbrook RCMP request if you see someone disposing of a lit cigarette, call them at 250-489-3471 and provide the following information: plate number of the vehicle, vehicle description and the description of the driver. Also, what direction the vehicle was traveling and its last known location.

Failure to comply with the Wildfire Act or Wildfire Regulation may result in the following penalties: – Fail to report a fire: $115
- Drop, release, or mishandle a burning substance: $173
- Fail to extinguish a burning substance: $173 – Light, fuel or use fire against restrictions: $345.

Anyone found in contravention of an open-fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to a year in jail.
If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
