What’s Under Your Feet?
The public is invited to a free lecture by Dr. Richard Hebda titled ‘What’s Under Your Feet?’ in the Royal Alexandra Hall on Wednesday, March 30 at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served following the lecture.
The lecture aims to inform and describe the wealth of fossil resources under the feet of Kootenay residents, describe the uniqueness of our fossils, and the importance they play in the recorded chronology of life on earth. Dr. Hebda will speak about the national and international significance of specimens found in British Columbia such as Burgess Shale and the McKay group encouraging the desire to keep them at institutions within B.C. such as the Cranbrook History Centre.
Richard Hebda has a Ph. D. in Botany from the University of British Columbia and has been a Curator at the Royal British Columbia Museum (Botany and Earth History) for more than 32 years and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Victoria (Biology, Earth and Ocean Sciences) for more than 28 years.
Dr. Hebda serves as the Province of B.C.’s science advisor in Paleontology. He was the curator of the Royal BC Museum’s Dragon Bones exhibit on Chinese dinosaurs (2003) and its permanent Climate Change exhibit. He was the first faculty coordinator of the Restoration of Natural Systems Program at the University of Victoria and the Province of British Columbia’s expert advisor on Burns Bog (purchased as a globally unique ecosystem).
He studies vegetation and climate history of British Columbia, Ethnobotany of BC First Nations, climate change and its impacts, restoration of natural systems and processes, ecology and origins of Garry oak and alpine ecosystems and botany of grasses.
Dr. Hebda, with his graduate students, is author of 110 plus scientific papers; 200 plus popular articles mainly on bulbs, native plants and climate change; (co) author of four books and major reports, (co)editor of three books.
Accompanying Dr. Hebda, and participating in discussions, will be Elisabeth Deom, P. Ag., Senior Policy Advisor for Land Tenures Branch of the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations.
