John “Jack” CUNLIFFE
Jack (John Christopher) Cunliffe was born September 5, 1947, in Fernie, B.C., where he grew up in the Annex, with his sisters, Jean and Myrna, and his brother, Bob. He loved and admired his parents, John Hereford Cunliffe and Regina, and spoke fondly of them throughout his life.
Jack spent his life working, playing and helping others throughout the valley. Over the years, he worked for Fernie Cartage, MC Cash, Brown’s Meat Market and the Elko sawmill. He also enjoyed hunting, guide outfitting with his good friend Jim Hicks, and cooking for hunting camps, especially fresh bread and pies.
Jack had many passions. He earned his pilot’s license in 1973, was a lifelong snowmobiler, and played an important role in the early trail-grooming program for the Fernie Snowmobile Association. In later years, he became a talented woodworker and restored antique gas pumps, building an impressive collection of 27 beautifully restored pumps.
Jack was always willing to lend a hand and could be counted on by family and friends. Those who knew him will always remember his favourite saying:
“There are two ways to do it — Jack’s way or the wrong way.”
Jack was a best friend, a mentor and an important part of the lives of those who loved him. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
